What started as one mans dream 30 years ago has now become the opportunity of a lifetime for someone else.  Fort Devils Tower is located at the junction of Highway 24 and the Devils Tower National Monument Road (HWY 110).  Sitting on approximately 2 acres of prime highway frontage, Fort Devils Tower offers many luxuries that include: a restaurant, bar, convenience/gift store, gas, campground, a small home and a photo tower with a spectacular view of the world famous Devils Tower.  These luxuries make Fort Devils Tower a one stop shop for all tourists visiting the area. 

With a majority of the buildings being built before the 1950’s the main attraction is the custom log portion that houses the restaurant and bar.  Built in 1984 by Highland Log Builders out of British Colombia the magnificent building is comprised of 16 inch larch logs from Idaho adds the exclamation point to the property.  Vaulted ceilings, an open dining area above the bar and bandstand area overlooking the dining areas and the bar add a one of a kind setting that few establishments possess.  The bar itself was built in the 1880’s and completes the building. 

Behind the improvements sits the campground with a first class view of the Devils Tower.  The campground features 12 full RV hookups and 25 tent sites.  There is also access to bathrooms outside of the restaurant and bar.  These restrooms are located along the large vertical log fence that is a replica of what old forts used in the days of the Wild West.  This fence offers a lovely buffer area between the improvements and the campground portion of the property.  Inside the fenced area there is access into the restaurant and bar.  The fenced area has a large concrete area that can be used as an additional dining area or for outdoor dances and gatherings.  There is also a nice bandstand area servicing this area as well.

While the improvements on the property are impressive the real show stealer sits behind the property.  It is the Devils Tower.  The tower rises 1,267 feet above the Belle Fourche River.  It is a sacred site for many American Indian tribes and was called many names including: Bear’s Lodge, Bear’s Tipi and Tree Rock.  It is believed that the Tower got its name when Colonel Dodge’s translator misinterpreted the name to mean Bad God’s Tower, later shortened to Devils Tower.  In 1906 President Theodore Roosevelt proclaimed the Devils Tower the nation’s first national monument.  In 1977 the hit movie “Close Encounters of a Third Kind” cemented the Devils Tower as a must see tourist destination.  Also boosting the tourist traffic through Fort Devils Tower is the Sturgis bike rally that is only 80 miles away.
